| Greetings! |
|
Dear Metropolitan,
This Sunday, we celebrate our Lord's Supper to remember the sacrifice of our savior. . . After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come (1 Corinthians 11:25).
Pastor Hicks will preach both services.
Kirk Whalum to visit Metropolitan
The Metropolitan Music Ministry guest artist for their Christian Artists Live in Worship series will be Grammy, Stellar, and Dove nominated saxophonist Kirk Whalum who has a limited pre-release of his new cd, "The Gospel According to Jazz: Chapter 3." Chapters 2 and 3 were both critically acclaimed gospel cd's.
Mr. Whalum grew up in the church. According to his bio "having grown up a "pastor's kid," it's not surprising to learn that Kirk's warm, melodic sound was birthed in the Baptist church."
Don't miss this opportunity to hear him live.
See you on Sunday!

| The Commitment to Stewardship |
|
It does not require great learning to be a great steward. It requires only an honest heart and a willingness to obey God. Consider this, if we don't make our offerings according to our income, God may make our income according to our offering.
Now wouldn't that be something!
Excerpted from It's All Yours by Dr. Winfred M. Hope. |
| A Season of Thanksgiving |
For 21 days we fasted and prayed and sought the Lord for direction and clarity as we Repositioned ourselves for Transition. Dr. Maurice Watson ministered to our souls during our Fall Revival and reminded us to trust God for a BREAKTHROUGH! Metropolitan, now IT'S TIME for us to Thank God for answering our prayers! Metropolitan Member James Burrell Fought to Help
Metropolitan member James Burrell was featured in the Washington Post recently for trying to help a disabled man who died before the city approved funding for his care.
Mr. Johnson's case began with the help of James Burrell, 78, a retiree who worked in an AARP outreach program. In 1989, the former Department of Defense worker volunteered with AARP and was assigned to help the man and his mother with paperwork and bills.
When the man's mother died in 1993, it was clear that the government would have to step in because the man had no other relatives. Burrell made some calls and kept helping the man while awaiting answers, he said. Read more. . .
Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell Interviewed by Reuters
Rev. Brenda Girton Mitchell was quoted in Reuters article about the Obama presidency:
Baptist preacher and Obama backer Brenda Girton-Mitchell, 60, said she had enough faith "in the human psyche" to believe that Obama would prevail over McCain.
But she echoes blacks across the country when she notes that polls have fooled them before, citing the famous case of Tom Bradley, an African American who narrowly lost the 1982 California governor's election despite leading in polls. Read the full story. . .
Metropolitan Builder Mourned
Robert Furman (Furman Brothers), the general contractor for the construction of the current Metropolitan Baptist Church building recently passed away at the age of 93. He was a kind gentleman who had great affection for the church and for the pastor. We are saddened by this loss.
For more than 60 years, Robert Furman lived a quiet life in the Washington suburbs as a businessman with a successful building and contracting company.
He was an engineer who had worked on a large construction project as a young man -- few people knew exactly how large -- and used his early experience to build the Potomac Mills Mall in Prince William County, the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, the U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua and hundreds of other structures.
