WASHINGTON, DC – September 12, 2008 – On Saturday, September 27,
2008 at noon, the Metropolitan Baptist Church, in conjunction with the Most
Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia, will lay the
cornerstone and raise the cross on its new sanctuary located at at 100 Capitol
Court in Largo, MD. Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, Jr., Senior Servant, will address the
gathering and the Metropolitan Music Ministry will perform.
The new Metropolitan church building is under construction on 34 acres of land
and is three times larger than the current church facility in Washington, DC.
With much more space to grow the church’s parking will increase from one
allotted space in the District to over 1100. The sanctuary will seat 3,000 and
will prominently feature a specially commissioned Casavant Freres Pipe Organ
designed with over 5000 pipes constructed mostly by hand. According to Dr.
Hicks, the organ is “designed to reflect the majesty of our Christ in our
worship.”
For over 143 years, Metropolitan Baptist Church has served as a primary voice of
social advocacy, spiritual health and wholeness in the District of Columbia.
With a strong membership of over 3,500 persons and nearly 40 active ministries,
Metropolitan is committed to effecting positive change in its future Prince
George’s County home and beyond.
According to the senior servant, Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, Jr. “The erection of a
new Tabernacle for Christ opens to us the opportunity not simply to build a
building, but to create an innovative and life-changing place of ministry that
will mark the life of the church for decades to come. We will build lives,
change families, nurture children, and impact our new community for Christ.”
